Section two

Packs, and getting the size right

Measure from the bony bump at the base of your neck to the top of your hip bones. That number, not your height, is what decides the size.

Torso sizing

Small15 to 17 in
Medium17 to 19 in
Large19 to 21 in

Hip belts swap for a different size free of charge within 60 days, so ordering the wrong one is not a problem worth worrying about.

The two packs

Cascade 55
55 L, 3 lb 4 oz, carries to 40 lb
$239
Cascade 35
35 L, long days and single overnights
$179

Both use the same harness, so if the 35 fits you the 55 will too.

Section three

Bags and pads

Down is responsible down standard certified. R values are lab figures, not marketing ones.

Emberline 20
20°F, 650 fill down, regular and long, left or right zip
$279
Emberline 32
For warmer nights and shoulder season
$219
Loft pad
Inflatable, R value 4.2
$129

An honest note on the Loft pad

R value 4.2 is enough for shoulder season and cold nights, and it is not enough for deep winter. If you are sleeping out in January in the mountains, you want more than this pad gives you, and we would rather say so here than read it in a return note.

Rentals run from the Bend warehouse only. Twenty dollars a day for a tent, twelve for a pack, and the rental comes off the price if you buy the same model within thirty days.

"Sent a six year old Ridge 2 back with a delaminating fly. They repaired it and posted it back inside two weeks, no argument, no receipt hunt."

Returns and warranty

Sixty days on unused items in original packaging, with a free prepaid label inside the US. Thirty days on used gear that failed in normal use. Exchanges ship as soon as the return is scanned, so you are not waiting twice.

Fernwood branded gear carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects: seams, zips, buckles, fabric delamination. Accidents, animal damage and UV wear are not covered, but we repair most of it from $25 rather than tell you to buy another one.
